A wonderful and delightful book of love poems for anyone who appreciates beautiful poetry.

I have purchased and read numerous copies of “Everyman’s library pocket poets” over the years. I recently bought this 256 page hardcover edition of “Love Poems” selected and edited by Peter Washington. The wonderful book has selections from poets of the past and contemporary poets. This book is organized into the following topic areas:

Definitions and persuasions, love and poetry, praising the loved one, pleasures and pains, fidelity and inconstancy, absence, estrangement and parting, and love past. This unique collection has some of the most beautiful and enduring love poems I have ever read. All the most famous and loved poets are included in this book of love poems. The most quoted writer of all time William Shakespeare, the legendary Emily Dickinson, the dark and brooding Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most read poets Robert Frost and numerous other great poets have selections in this collection. These love poems are from poets around the world which makes it a must have volume for your own personal library collection of poetry books.

If you love poetry this is a must collection of “Love Poems” you will want to own. This short review cannot do justice to this wonderful volume.

An Understanding of Love

I am naturally drawn to tiny books and this book was no exception. I saw it and instantly fell in love with the red library binding and gold embossing on the fabric cover. This is one of those books you want to carry around with you in your pocket to read on a sunny day while sitting on a park bench.

While most of the poems were new to me, I did find lines to make any poet drown in the pure beauty of words. "In My Sky at Twilight" is a paraphrase of the 30th poem in Raindranath Tagore's The Gardener. The images are lush and mingle emotion with nature. "In Former Days" by Bhartrhari (5th Century) is witty and beautiful in its simplicity. Two lovers are so in love they forget their separateness and then drift back to being "you" and "me." The poem is a mere four lines and yet it provides a intimate look at how lovers feel when in love and when they drift apart. I loved a few lines in "The Palanquin" where a butterfly lands on delicate skin and transfers colors onto the lover's skin.

The poems are divided into 7 sections:

Love and Poetry
Praising the Loved One
Pleasures and Pains
Fidelity and Inconstancy
Absence, Estrangement and Parting
Love Past

You may recognize poems by Lord Byron, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, Walt Whitman and Dorothy Parker. I was pleasantly surprised by poems by Leconte De Lisle, Pablo Neruda and Dioskorides.

You will find a wide range of love poems. This book contains selections from ancient China to modern America. These poems present the universal experience of the human heart.

This bookwas much smaller than I expected (my own fault and not necessarily a flaw) but it is filled with wonderful, wonderful love poems. I keep it on my coffee table for whenever I feel the whim to read a poem and I've read quite a few in this book. They picked some very good poems from a broad array of poets.

functioning words: "the ART of..." not "how-to"

I inherited this book from my father and enjoyed perusing it from time-to-time. I loved that book dearly, and so, decided to share it with others by donating it to our local library.

Another reviewer was correct that it is not a typical "how-to" book, but it is an inspirational art book of classic Japanese joinery. The reason there is little "how-to" information here is because there are so many ways to accomplish these joints; by machine, entirely by hand, or with jigs and many combinations thereof. Also, the only people interested in this type of work are those who simply find it fascinating or are expert craftsmen. In either case, extraneous "how-to" info is not needed.

The book is beautiful, unique, and about an arcane subject, so it has high merit solely in that respect. If you love this type of thing, it is for you and highly recommended. Gorgeous photographs of intricate, hand-crafted joinery are intriguing for some of us woodworkers, even if we never intend to use these joints. And for those of who have made some of these joints, the excellent examples provide a high benchmark for grading our own efforts.

Most of the joinery in this book was cut by hand with traditional Japanese hand tools: Dozuki saws, chisels and wooden planes. Part-time "Home" craftsmen may find these examples inspiring, intimidating or outright depressing in comparison to their own work. My father was a world-class craftsman ( a violin repairman and pattern-maker) so he made many of these joints just for practice, although the methods he chose would undoubtedly differ from traditional Japanese woodworker's ways.

The few joints in here that I found practical use for were the construction joints that help isolate vibration while maintaining structural integrity. Although these timber-framing joints are intended to provide flexible-yet-strong houses in earthquake-prone Japan, they are also useful in building recording-studios where sound-transmission through joist-conduction must be minimized. I suspect that very few construction workers would have the confidence in their skills to cut some of these complex joints into an expensive 60-foot glue/ lam beam as I did. Of course, I would have never risked that without practicing the joints first on less expensive material with the expert help of my father. If you build recording studios, or want an Earth friendly yet Earthquake resistant home, you may find practical applications for timber framing joinery within. Although I have not heard of many architects using this joinery, I have thought of other applications. The metal-free joinery ( without nails or screws) in this volume could solve some design problems in structures that contain super-powerful magnets for nuclear medicine or particle physics labs.

If you want a "gee-whiz! YOU TOO can create these fancy joints with simple techniques and cheap tools" type of book, look elsewhere. This is not a book for the Sears Table-saw crowd.

This is a magnificent tome for an elite group of artisans and art-lovers.

Fantastic pictures, but not a guide

This book is wonderful, if you think of the title as "Artful Pictures of Japanese Joinery" or perhaps "Japanese Joinery Art." Saying it the way that it is can be misleading, at least it was for me.

Pages 1-25 are a very cursory overview of the art of carpentry in ancient Japan. Pages 25-88 are full page, gorgeous pictures of different Japanese carpenter's joints. Pages 89-106 are a series of cutaway line drawings of joints, almost an attempt to show you how to do it, but more just to show the complexity of the joints themselves.

But nowhere are there clear, explicit instructions with proportions or techniques to create these joints. This wasn't clear from the description, which is actually quite misleading saying that "even the weekend carpenter can duplicate these bequests from the traditional Japanese carpenter" using this book. That is absolutely not the case, at least for this weekend carpenter.

Great pictures, fantastic art, but a poorly conceived and advertised book for the purpose of making this art. Try The Complete Japanese Joinery instead if you want to make these.

Great Book

If you want to learn about Japanese joinery this is an excellent choice. If you want to make Japanese joints, then I would say this should be an essential companion book to "The Complete Japanese Joinery" by Hideo Sato & Yasua Nakahara, which is a much more hands on how-to treaty.

There are some nice b/w photos of temple architecture in Nara & shimane, followed by 57 beautiful b/w photos of various complex joints all crafted with expert precision. The text describes the function, splicing, and connecting of joints.

Again this is not a technical manual per se, but if you are interested in the subject there is limited choices and I personally love this book.
