About the Author
Gregory Pence is one of the pioneering bioethicists of America. Having taught for thirty years in a medical school, he has seen many past prophecies of doom fail. He is optimistic about biotechnology.

He is internationally famous for defending cloning and genetically modified food against bioLuddites who oppose research on stem cells and cloning. Because of his views, his talks have been picketed by Greenpeace and anti-cloning zealots.

His Classic Cases in Medical Ethics: Accounts of the Cases that Shaped Medical Ethics, 4th ed., 2003, is one of the standard textbooks of bioethics. His Who's Afraid of Human Cloning? (1998) is already regarded as a classic in bioethics for its rigorous attack on opponents of cloning. His Cloning After Dolly: Who's STILL Afraid of Human Cloning? will appear in late 2004. His Designer Food: Mutant Harvest or Breadbasket of the World? won a Choice Outstanding Academic Title in 2003.

He doesn't think the sky will fall if a cloned baby is born. In opposing laws against cloning, he was asked to testify in 2001 before Congress and in 2002 before the California Senate.

Constantly in demand for national television, Pence has been interviewed on Bobby Battista's "Talk Back Live" with Bobby Battista, "The Point" with Gretta von Susteren on CNN, "The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel" on CBS, "Wolf Blitzer's Washington" on CNN, as well as on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" and its "Weekend Edition." He has also been interviewed by TIME magazine, the New York Times, and most national publications. He has published in Newsweek, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

Pence has given the Soundings Lecture at Castleton State College, VT, the Thornton Lecture at Alma College, MI, the Seidman Trust Lecture at Rhodes College, TN, and the Hughes Memorial Lecture at West Liberty State College in WVA. He has talked at Princeton, Yale, and Stanford. He has given keynote talks about cloning at universities in Portugal, London, Switzerland, and Australia.

Pence teaches at the medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), where he also directs a program for gifted undergraduates pre-admitted to UAB medical school. There, he has been voted Best Teacher.

He grew up in Washington, D.C., was graduated from the College of William and Mary cum laude in Philosophy, and earned his doctorate from New York University in 1974, where he worked on his dissertation under bioethicist Peter Singer, now at Princeton University.

Simply THE best introduction to medical ethics. Period.

I've been teaching with this book for nearly 10 years, having survived several new editions and I keep coming back to it, for several reasons:

1. It's easy to read. Honestly, some textbooks (especially Philosophy) can be dry, using big words to explain big concepts that only make sense to those in the major. This book is written in everyday language, which means a lot to undergraduate students with huge reading schedules. The key terms are still introduced, but in a way that's not off-putting to undergraduates.

2. It's interesting. The cases are about real people and the real medical dilemmas they were faced with, placed in the context of history and significance for ethics. It's all relevant.

3. The tough topics are there. Pence does a great job explaining what can be difficult ideas to grasp. The case studies are examples. The ethical debates are very clearly identified.

4. It's both ethics and medicine. Some other reviews (of previous editions) suggest the ethics chapter should be gone -- no way! The field is, after all, medical ETHICS, so it would be negligent not to include the ethical theory. Most of the concepts people already understand; Pence does a good job explaining the technical words for them (like utilitarianism, deontology, etc.).

5. It really is objective. Despite protests from those who feel Pence beats up on religion -- especially regarding abortion -- the many complicated sides of these controversial issues are presented. (NOTE: It is a FACT that the Catholic Church turned away from science in response to Darwin with its policy of infallibility in the late 19th century, that there's a ban against birth control, and that the Bible defines life according to breath through the nostrils. Pence presents this information because it impacts the interpretation of the Church's position on certain issues. If philosophy can't be critical, there is no point in studying ethics at all).

This is by far the best introduction to medical ethics I've found. It's not perfect, but there's nothing better. Yet.

Good job balancing both sides, and interesting.

I was dreading taking my medical ethics class, but having this book for our text made it interesting. The text was engaging and the average person should be able to understand it. I was pretty sure of how I felt about a lot of controversial medical topics before I read this book, but the author really opened my eyes in areas that surprised me. I didn't read the entire book, but about 3/4 of it, and I am very glad that I did.

I think the author did an excellent job of presenting both sides of issues. Just when I would think I had him figured out, he would turn and argue for the other side. Very informative.

Fascinating

I originally picked up this book for a class that I ended up dropping as I changed my majors. I opened up the first page and found it easy to read and easy to remember. Two things I don't often find books that relate to any specific field (right now I'm reading a dense book on economics).

It's a fascinating book that does provide both sides to the arguments. It's not biased, it's just presenting a fair, objective point of view backed by evidence of the claims i.e. the church's stance on abortion, cloning, assisted suicide, as well as providing a counter argument based off of those interested in compassion, the expression of the individual, and their right to a fair and humane life.

It's very informative and articles that would otherwise be hard to find on the internet and would be very dense or lengthy are summarized in layman's terms. I found that it makes it easy to remember the key points which can easily be recalled in a discussion of the subject. For example, before Roe vs. Wade, abortions were still happening just in unsafe conditions with a high mortality rate. After the Supreme court passed that landmark judgement, abortions were conducted within the letter of the law in more hygienic facilities with a lower mortality rate. Roe vs. Wade didn't make abortion normal or mainstream, it just moved the practice out of dangerous and dingy places where patients couldn't hold the practitioners liable for any complications or malpractice.

About the Author
John O. Everett, Ph.D., CPA, is Professor of Accounting at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Dr. Everett has served as a speaker and instructor for numerous professional education programs, including the national training courses of Ernst & Young and McGladrey & Pullen. A graduate of Oklahoma State University, he has authored or coauthored a number of articles in academic and professional journals. He is the coauthor of several textbooks, including TaxPoint, coauthored with Cherie Hennig as the first interactive tax textbook on the Web. Cherie Hennig, Ph.D., M.B.A., is Professor and Faculty Director of the Executive Master's of Science in Taxation Program at Florida International University. Dr. Hennig began her career as an IRS Revenue Agent in Denver, CO. Nancy B. Nichols, Ph.D, M.S., is Associate Professor of Accounting and the MSA Program Director at James Madison University. Philosophy Made Simple

How simple could it be? Well, it isn't particularly, but it is more simple when you have this book. I first read this text as a freshman in junior college in 1972... Ugh. But I've referred to it ever since then, first as an introduction and later a quick resource for contrast and comparison. It was wonderful, and over the years it has been on my reference shelf and lent out to friends, students and my kids again and again. When I recently lost my original copy I was surprised to find that it was still in print, and didn't hesitate to order a replacement. The viewpoints of each of the classic authors represented my not be detailed enough for every inquiry, but this book helps in overcoming the hesitation you may have when you want/need to read the writers for yourself. So, for this reader, as a survey of major philosophical views and concepts, this book is wonderful.

Great Introduction

I took two philosophy courses about 15 years ago when I was doing my undergraduate work. When I became interested in philosophy recently I found Philosophy Made Simple. For a mere ten dollars this book gives one a terrific introduction to philosophy. Don't think just because it has "Made Simple" in the title that it is somehow overly dumbed down for the readers. The book conatains quite a few excerpts from some of the major thinkers in the history of philosophy. This book also gives one an overview of a number of different areas of philosophy which will be great for someone like me, who doesn't even know where to start. You can then easily pull names of philosopers from whatever area you are interested in out of the book and begin reading their individual works as I have. Overall a great read.

Good overview of philosophy, but a little long-winded

I bought this as a sort of "Cliff Notes" for philosophy, since I don't really know much about the subject and wanted to learn more, particularly about contemporary philosophy. While the book is very thorough, it gets a little boring, and I kept wondering when it would discuss the contemporary stuff. Well it turns out that is only covered in the last like 10 pages, unfortunately. I ended up skimming large portions of the book, which is easy to do because critical sections are highlighted in bold. Overall pretty good, but if you're looking for a quick summary of philosophy, this isn't super quick.

Unputdownable

Abimbola Dare has continued in the vein of her previous work, 'The Small Print', which was to send messages to listening ears and eyes without being overtly preachy. She has managed to create believable characters in real life situations with real life problems. All her characters are explained with the WHY alongside the WHAT makes them WHO they are. The WORD never gets in the way of a great story, while a great story never gets in the way of the WORD. It is a story that EVERY woman and man will learn from.

Well written and a compelling read. Thoroughly backed.

I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. I have never heard of this author so I was taking a leap of faith. From the very beginning I was into the book. I didn't want to put it down and had to force myself to stop reading. There was not one boring part of the book. There was also a big shocker that had me shaking my head. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

Eye Opening, Enlightening Read!

In "When Broken Chords Sing", Abimbola Dare captured vividly the many facets of abuse that occur in our communities.

From parental abuse as in Chris' and Amina's families, to spousal abuse at various levels by Destiny in particular and the other residents of The Safe Place. She also reflected on the helplessness that bystanders in family settings, church settings, community settings feel in the face of such abuse as seen in Destiny's mother's refusal to admit her daughter's abuse by her husband and Amina's mother's inability to stand up to protect her daughter. She reflected how such "helplessness" further emboldens the abuser as seen in the apparent support given by Pastor Dayo and Chris's mother and sister.

What intrigued me the most is Dare's pinpointing of the fact that the best way to deal with abuse is for the abused person to know that they need to save themselves first, before they save their marriage and their child(ren). To do that, they need to get out of and stay away from the abusive relationship and environment. That's what Kezzy should have done.

Very well written, I felt I was in the story experiencing it all with Destiny. I wish that I could give this book to all the young ladies I know, to help them know understand that abuse is something that they can walk into inadvertently like Destiny did, urging them to find themselves first before looking for a partner in life!
