The prominent Japanese architect Tadao Ando combines history and nature, intellect and emotions in a unique manner. His ideas are interesting for the educated reader as well as for students of architecture and of Japan. Mr. Hunter's very readable translation clarifies Ando's personal history and motivation, particularly his personal interaction with technology and modernity. Ando retains a strong commitment to both social responsibility and working with the earth's features such as light, wind and water. His architecture fulfills his goal of synthesizing history and the present, art and reality, abstract and concrete, east and west. He innovates without falling under the seductive spell of technology. Ando's response to the Kobe earthquake and the Fukushima disaster demonstrate his respect for historical memories and the spirit of nature. Moreover, the book elucidates the sources of the youthful Ando's inspiration - the great men, travels and studies - in order to provide a road map to his successors. Finally, the smooth flow of language, aided by the illustrations, makes this work enjoyable for the general reader.

This is one of the few books in English that opens a door to Ando's personality and worldview. I loved every page of this book and recommend it to any Ando fan. You'll get a sense of who he is and why his buildings resonate the way they do. His advice to architecture students is worth the price of admission alone!

Great Book, and Much Cheaper Than The "College Version"

I am in culinary school and this is the required text for our classes. After hours of researching online, and even taking the time to call the publisher, I finally decided to take a risk by buying this "Trade" version rather than the "College Version," offered here on Amazon and in our school's bookstore. Rest assured! This book is EXACTLY the same as the "College Version," but it doesn't include the CulinarE Companion CD (which our school does not utilize anyway)! I even had the instructors at school ask the publisher about the differences, and they admitted that there are none! All of the recipes and page numbers match up identically. Save yourself the $36+ dollars and buy this version instead of getting ripped off by a marketing scam to get more money out of students by calling a book the "College Version" - I'm glad I did!

We are just getting into the book, so I can't offer too much of an opinion, but from what I've seen so far, I'm impressed! I just wanted to add my review so that hopefully another student like myself can save some money. I hope it helps!

Amazing!!!

I discovered cooking through a Great Courses program from The Teaching Company and wanted to further my education (you should get that course). This book is HUGE! It covers everything. However, if you don't already know a little about cooking, its format can lose you. Here's how I am using it: I find a recipe for a complete dinner I like and then I find the references to the techniques required in this book. After some study and note taking, I am ready to cook. The book is really formatted for having a cooking teacher. I can't use it that way. For example, the chapter cutting and chopping food is great, but you will never do all that cutting and chopping for any meal. So, if you need to cut up carrots for a meal, go to that section and learn what to do - skip the rest. Also, I found the website software a waste. Maybe I just don't know how to use it properly, but for me it's worthless. Final analysis, if you want a complete text to improve your cooking, buy this book and you will always have a resource that tells you what to do. The next time a recipe uses some strange word, turn to the index, find the page, study, and cook. The results? Delicious!

Excellent book - check what you are (not) getting with the Kindle version before purchasing!

The book content is awesome, very well written and explanations are very good. Some sections need to be read several times because there is so much information in each phrase that you are probably missing additional useful content. Still easy to read though.

A few things to take into consideration before purchasing: This book is pretty big and heavy physically, so I went for the Kindle version. while it is a book printout and you can't get the nice features of a real Kindle book. It's still alright if you can live with it, which is my case.

The 4/5 stars is because the physical version comes with a code to download a menu-making software that the electronic version doesn't have (as it comes as a separate piece of paper). You can only get it with the physical version or purchase the code separately for 40$. Not a good deal in my opinion.

About the Author
Suheil Bushrui is a distinguished author, poet, critic and translator, particularly revered as an authority on the works of W. B. Yeats and Kahlil Gibran. A university professor for the last 56 years, Bushrui has taught at universities in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and North America. He is currently the professor and first incumbent of the George and Lisa Zakhem Kahlil Gibran Chair for Values and Peace at the University of Maryland, where he is also a Senior Scholar of Peace with the Center for International Development and Conflict Management. The recipient of many awards, Bushrui’s published work is extensive, in both English and Arabic, and includes The Wisdom of the Arabs, The Prophet: A New Annotated Edition and The Spiritual Heritage of the Human Race.

James M. Malarkey is a specialist in Middle Eastern and North African affairs. The Chair of Humanities and General Education at Antioch University McGregor, Malarkey has taught Anthropology at Antioch College, Cultural Studies at the American University of Beirut, Linguistics at the University of Constantine, Algeria, as well as World Classics at Antioch University McGregor.

Good clear anthology of Arabic literature in existing translations

A very good anthology of Arabic literature in translation, this is a revamped and somewhat re-selected version of the authors' earlier Literary Heritage of the Arabs: An Anthology, published in hardback in 2012. Its idea of anthologizing existing translations of Arabic literature is similar to Robert Irwin's in his anthology, Night and Horses and the Desert: An Anthology of Classical Arabic Literature (2002, now republished as The Penguin Anthology of Classical Arabic Literature), down to virtally borrowing Irwin's original title (the reference is to a famous couplet by the tenth-century poet al-Mutanabbi). But in fact the two book are complementary. Irwin's book, while containing much literature in translation, encases that literature in a very readable critical narrative that contextualizes it, frequently providing commentary on the pieces. With no contextualizing narrative or commentary, Bushri and Malarkey are able to include many more translations, and in addition they continue to the present day. Bushrui and Malarkey are consequently much easier to dip into; Irwin, however, will leave you much better informed.
