An impetuous writing style, rooted in the dark imagery of warfare.

None are more unfeeling than the Death Korps of Krieg. A Krieg Guardsman has no hopes, no dreams, no desires, nothing but his orders. As far as he is concerned, there is nothing left but a violent end. Now they are ordered to a mining planet named Hieronymous Theta where, after sleeping deep underground for millions of years, the Necrons are awakening. The planet is rich in minerals, a valuable resource to the Imperium, thus not to be given up easily.

Mine overseer Gunthar Soreson never considered himself to be a hero. He would rather run than fight. But when it becomes plain to see that the Planetary Defense Force is ill equipped to deal with the remorseless metal warriors and Arex, the woman he loves, is trapped within the sealed capital city, Gunthar has no choice in the matter. Gunthar will train and then fight with the Death Korps of Krieg to either rescue Arex or wipe out her killers.

**** FOUR STARS! There is an interesting mix of unemotional characters on both sides of this war. After finishing the book, I still find myself uncertain as to which is stonier, the Necrons or the Krieg Guardsmen. The author also follows a few civilians, breaking up the morbidity of endless battles in favor of showing the realistic and not always humane reactions of humans during the fallout.

Author Steve Lyons has an impetuous writing style, rooted in the dark imagery of warfare, which kept me enthralled from start to finish. ****

Not your typical Imperial Guard novel

First, a disclaimer:

In my experience, most stories regarding servicemen tend to be quite formulaic and generic. Apart from the war and battle scenes they find themselves in, the rest of the story is mainly about barracks room drama and their personality clashes and conflicts with one another, and lots of minor dramas they have with other characters on their own side, e.g with civilians, wives, spouses, superior officers, whatever. There will also be a lot of filler material dedicated to enlightening the reader about a particular character's quirks and habits, and the more self-indulgent authors may even drag these bits out into entire chapters by themselves. This seems to be the standard approach to building characters that the reader can feel and root for.

Unfortunately I find this approach utterly boring.

I don't like filler, and I don't like reading details that are in the end utterly irrelevant to the story at hand. I don't like reading about characters for their own sake. I don't like simple and uninspiring plotlines being held aloft and then lengthened by mountains of loquaciousness over every insignificant detail. I like my stories tightly written. In hindsight it isn't a surprise that my experiences with the Gaunt's Ghosts series have not been as enjoyable as I'd hoped, and left me with an aversion to picking up any novel regarding the common soldier that makes up the bulk of the Emperor's warriors.

Thus, it was with great trepidation when I finally picked up this book at the behest of a friend's recommendation.

Dead Men Walking is not your typical Imperial Guard novel. It is set in the 40k setting and it has familiar factions involved - Death Korps Imperial Guard versus Necrons - but the main characters in this story aren't of any Guardsmen. Instead we are given a view of how events unfold through the eyes and experiences of a cast of mainly civilians and non-combatants caught in between the Necrons and their supposed saviours, the Death Korps of Krieg.

Thus, readers expecting a Guard novel centering around the lives, exploits and heroics of Imperial Guardsmen may find themselves disappointed with the story paying more attention to the perspectives of non-combatant characters. I think that for this reason alone many readers may not be able to enjoy this book as it does not conform to their expectations.

Dead Men Walking is not without its action scenes and gripping accounts of heroics. The plot progresses very smoothly and there is a very steady escalation of threat and direness of the situations the characters find themselves in. The characters fight well against the Necrons, in the ways they are able. The characters are taxed beyond their limits by the circumstances they find themselves in, and yet for all that, this isn't a story with a happy ending.

This story has one of the most intense endings that I have ever read. Most other stories have epilogues and endings just to tie up loose ends and place simple and easy closures on plotlines already ended a chapter or two back. The ending in Dead Men Walking is gripping, tense, and eminently memorable, but you would only feel that as well if you had the patience to follow the characters from the beginning of the story to its end. This is a story that closes with a bang.

If I had to sum up what Dead Men Walking is about in one paragraph, I would say that this isn't so much a tale of heroism or of humanity's indomitable spirit against overwhelming odds, but one of human frailty and limits. Because of this, and because it is well written, it is one of the better books in the Black Library catalogue for the additional depth it gives to the 40k universe.

good effort but...

Good effort by the author in trying to put the inhumane and stoic guardsmen of the death korps in a very human conflict against a terrifying and alien enemy. unfortunately as the story progresses the death korps becomes the background instead of the main subject. As expected of a imperial guard novel the reader expected more action and focus on the death korps troopers...but the beleaguered planets PDF received as much attention as the guardsmen.

This graceful and charming study by the author of The Cat and the Human Imagination should please social historians as much as dog lovers. Rogers has researched the role dogs have played in society from ancient civilizations to the present. Her careful analysis is buttressed by literary references throughout the centuries, such as Jack London's White Fang, Virginia Woolf's Flush and excerpts from Shakespeare. It wasn't until the 19th century, she notes, that dogs became thought of primarily as companions. Before then, they were hunters, herders and guarders whose job it was to protect houses and property (although early Egyptian wall paintings depict dogs as both hunters and beloved family members). Rogers documents how working dogs were forced to pull heavy carts beyond their abilities and subjected to other cruel treatment. For instance, bullbaiting (for which the original bulldog was bred) was a form of entertainment for 16th-century crowds that maimed and killed many animals. With dogs seen more as companions in the 19th century, systematic classification of breeds became popular, leading at mid-19th century to the development of the competitive show. Rudyard Kipling referred to the dog as "First Friend" in Just So Stories, and his tale parallels what has been discovered about the domestication of the dog. Roughly 10,000 years ago, wolves probably started the process on their own by hanging around human camps to scavenge scraps. The dog's consequent long dependence on, and long exploitation by, humans is explored in this new history of the dog-human bond. Rogers (The Cat and Human Imagination, 1998) examines all aspects of this long association, following the changing role of the dog in ancient civilizations, as hunting partners in medieval Europe, as working members of agricultural societies, and as pets whose only duty was companionship. A series of illustrations, ranging from Roman sculpture through medieval religious paintings, Flemish portraits, Victorian sentimental works, and modern paintings (all of which have lengthy captions), also reveals the changing iconography of the dog. A Celebration of Our Closest Animal Friend

"First Friend" offers a mine of information about the history of dogs and the humans who have loved them --- and a few who emphatically did not.

Humans were buried with their pet dogs in ancient Jericho, Homer's tough warrior Odysseus wept at the death of his devoted old hound Argus, and greyhounds were valued companions to Roman and medieval aristocrats. The Stuart kings loved their toy spaniels, and the poet Pope (who preferred Great Danes) doubted the goodness of a man who experimented on dogs. In the nineteenth century, Scott created a gallery of engaging canine characters, Byron praised his Newfoundland for having "all the Virtues of Man/ Without his Vices," Dickens regularly enhanced his characters by giving them appropriate dogs (Dora's Jip, Bill Sikes's Bull's-eye), and acerbic Jane Carlyle eulogized her Maltese mix Nero as "my inseparable companion during eleven years, ever doing his little best to keep me from feeling sad and lonely.'

The love continues today, of course, with the difference that we are more apt to recognize dogs as equal members of the family. People are no longer comfortable calling themselves the owners of their dogs; humane societies are promoting the term guardian instead.

Commemorating a Great Partnership

One of our dogs, Sammy, the fox terrier, has a behavior I find lovable. When I move in my library to my recliner to read, Sammy will get up from wherever he is to jump on the recliner's footstool and nap. He does not do so to get attention, for I don't thank him or pet him for doing so, and he has not gained in comfort, for he has usually abandoned a comfortable place on the sofa in order to walk over and jump on the footstool which has no more cushioning. He simply finds it more comfortable to be next to his human; I am complimented by this opinion, and I like him all the more for it, every time he joins me in this fashion. Sammy's behavior in this instance, and his behavior and that of my other dogs in many other instances, were on my mind as I read _First Friend: A History of Dogs and Humans_ (St. Martin's Press) by Katherine M. Rogers. Rogers does not include her own anecdotes with the book, but obviously loves dogs (her book is dedicated to her shepherd / retriever mix). This does not keep her from seeing them clearly; she disdains those who see dogs as equals, though she gives many examples of the impulse. Eugene O'Neill, for instance, wrote an epitaph for the family Dalmatian which praised "the only one of our children who has not disillusioned us." Without regarding dogs as furry, four-legged humans, however, there is much to admire in them, and much to admire about the mutually satisfying relationship between the two species.

Dogs and humans have been closely associated for millennia; the earliest dog fossil dates from 12000 BCE, and there is a grave from 10000 BCE in Israel that contains the skeleton of an elderly woman buried with a pup. It is clear that humans first found early wolfish dogs helpful, in scavenging and hunting, and humans selected dogs that were obedient and easy to be around. Samuel Johnson was behind his mid-eighteenth century times when he included only two roles for dogs in his _Dictionary_: "The larger sort are used as a guard; the less for sports." There was disapproval that dogs should take any other role. The work ethic came partially from Christianity. St. Thomas Aquinas indicated that since God gave man dominion over animals, man could do what he wanted with them, especially since we could not have true fellowship with creatures that could not reason or attain eternal life. As late as the mid-nineteenth century, Pope Pius IX would not permit in Rome a society against cruelty to animals because such an organization might suggest that humans had duties toward animals. Descartes systematized Aquinas to teach that soulless animals were mere machines, and didn't really feel anything; this did nothing for the hapless dogs taken up by the vivisectionists or the bull- or bear-baiters. Samuel Johnson denounced such treatment, but it took the secular utilitarian Jeremy Bentham to destroy the religious foundations upon which the treatment was founded; a dog is more rational and more able to communicate than a newborn baby, he reasoned, and even if not, "the question is not, Can they _reason_? nor, Can they _talk_? but Can they _suffer_?"

Humans cannot do anything perfectly, and mistreatment of dogs in history, and currently through puppy mills, is a theme here, but not a large one, because their partnership with us has been generally happy. Rogers gives scores of examples of famous people, especially literary ones, who loved their dogs. For example, Byron ended an epitaph on the marble monument of his dog Boatswain, "To mark a friend's remains these stones arise; / I never knew but one, - and here he lies." She gives many examples of dogs in literature, sometimes used mawkishly, but often with great subtlety. A classic example is Odysseus returning home to find that only his aging hound Argus remembers him. Jane Austen didn't concentrate on her characters' dogs, but made them revealing. Sleek sporting dogs are owned by shallow gentlemen, and the pug of the mindless Lady Bertram in _Mansfield Park_ gets more attention from her mistress than do any of her family members. There are pictures reproduced here of dogs in painting and sculpture, behaving through the centuries as dogs always have, looking pert, pretty, and friendly. Toward the end of the book is a section on dogs as equals, emphasizing that people have come to recognize explicitly that dogs do have rights; the famous trainer Barbara Woodhouse maintained that dogs were fully family members and "should have the same consideration as any other family member... within reason." But realistically, Rogers writes that we have a partnership between significantly different species, based partly on dependency and self interest on both sides, and no less loving or meaningful for that. Anyone who loves dogs will find much to enjoy here, and if you are one of the unfortunates that do not love dogs, no book will reform you.

Warning! Dog lovers, beware!

An interesting, if a bit dry and academic look at dogs throughout history. Ms. Rogers is an college professor and this has the feeling of a dissertation or thesis, rather than a "user friendly" book. She relies mostly on dogs as portrayed through paintings and novels, rather than social history or anthropology for her conclusions.

That being said, there are some interesting facts and interesting commentary from various sources. My main problem is the latter half of the book, which is mostly devoted to 19th century fictional literature on dogs. Much of this, as the author acknowledges (without ever really explaining "why"), are cautionary tales about the abuse and even torture of loving canine companions. It was bad enough that in centuries past, things are dog fights were common. But it appears that almost every novel (including many long out of print) about a dog is in some fashion about that dog being beaten, neglected, starved, tortured and in the very worst examples, vivisected (exploratory surgery done on live animals without anesthesia).

It appears that many of these novels were written with basically good intentions -- the desire of reformers to touch the hearts of decent people and dog-lovers, in the hopes that their outrage would end these barbaric practices, and at least partly that has happened over the decades. However, the sheer number of these books, the unremitting torture and bleakness, is staggering. I haven't even read the originals, and yet just Ms. Roger's description of books about vivisection will undoubtedly cause me nightmares for years to come.

But this begs the question of exactly how common these practices were, and why writers felt compelled to create these books about the misery and torture inflicted on helpless, loyal and affectionate animal companions. Where they exaggerating, in order to achieve their goal of banning or eliminating animal abuse? What kind of madness affected physicians and scientists of that era that they could debase themselves by these digusting and scientifically worthless acts of torture? Did one single piece of medical knowledge worth obtaining ever come from the sadistic abuse of a living creature?

Those are questions worth exploring, but are not delved into in this particular book. In fairness, given the title, I was expecting a more mellow and even light-hearted look at companion animals over the years. Certainly the paintings pictures alone suggest that despite the abuses, many dogs were greatly loved and well-cared for, and have been the closest companion animals to humankind for over 20,000 years. A little lightness to balance the dark might have been somewhat welcome here.

While not impugning Ms. Roger's formidable scholarship, I feel the need to warn anyone buying this for a dog-loving child or great-aunt, that the unrelenting darkness of the literary examples here, many of them deeply distressing and even stomach-turning, would make this book highly unsuitable for most of the readers who would normally enjoy this subject matter. Please be warned, before reading and especially before giving this as a gift!!!!

A very good text for a course in MV statistics

There exists a growing library of multivariate texts that include considerable depth and cover of a dazzling array of applications. The Essence of Multivariate Thinkingis a different kind of textbook. This is a short text that reads more like a series of handouts from an excellent course than a multivariate reference. The author makes clear that the goals of the book are not to present complete details of each method, rather the primary goal is to present a context for understanding multivariate analyses.

Most readers with an interest in MV statistics are familiar with the "gold standard" of the field, Tabachnick and Fidell's (2001) Using Multivariate Statistics (T&F for short). Perhaps the most relevant question for instructors and researchers is how Essence compares to T&F. T&F is a user-friendly, detailed and expansive statistical handbook that is a reference for research and teaching. Essence focuses on general strategies for understanding and thinking about MV statistics and learning the basics of several applications. This is not a text directed at researchers applying the procedures - for whom I strongly recommend T&F - but it is very well suited for instruction.

In reading the text, I was struck by how easy it would be to build a course around the book and supporting materials. Assignments, data, and computer programming code supplement the highly readable chapters. I would strongly recommend this text to first-time instructors, as the accompanying assignments and SAS materials are mostly ready-to-use and would reduce course preparation time considerably.

Perhaps the best thing I can say about the book is that after reading it I decided to adopt it for use in my own MV stats course.

Well-written and informative

Well-written and informative, this book was among my favorite class texts. I found the organization of the chapters and topics to be helpful. Charts and tables clearly summarized main points. I liked using the provided data to work through each statistical procedure. Using this familiar data set increased my confidence as I learned the similarities and differences among the analyses. I bought this book for class, but I have since referenced it many times while writing papers for other classes and my dissertation proposal.

Excellent text on statistical biomedical signal analysis

I am using this book as a primary textbook in a Biomedical Engineering undergraduate course on Biomedical signal analysis. The students in this class come with a fairly good background in linear systems, stochastic processes and physiology, and the purpose of the course is to integrate this knowledge, and actually apply it to real-world statistical biomedical signals. Previous iterations of the course relied on a general statistical signals book (Bendat & Piersol), together with physiological examples provided by the instructor, since physiological signals books were too shallow. The current book, however, elegantly integrates the statistical signal analysis topics with the relevant biomedical applications, and it became an obvious choice. Moreover, unlike general engineering textbooks, this book doesn't shy away from methods for treating nonstationary signals (segmentation, time-frequency analysis, wavelets, detection...), as these are so fundamental in characterizing biomedical signals. Such topics are typically treated in a multitude of specialized books, and are therefore difficult to integrate coherently into a short course.

To improve: since the book's focus is on EEG and ECG, it could be great if the authors added a chapter on source localization/inverse problems, which arise in both systems. Although this is a huge topic in its own, one could do some basic justice to this important topic in a limited space as well, and thereby introduce students to ill-posed problems and their regularization. I was also slightly dissapointed that there is very little on error bounds in compound estimates (correlation and spectral density functions).

CANNOT BE USED WITHOUT A CLASS, TEACHER, OR TUTOR

Do not purchase this expensive tome if you are trying to study Hebrew on your own. While it is modern Hebrew, you MUST have a class, a teacher, and/or a tutor to work your way through this massive edition. It is what they use for those making aliyah or studying in an ulpan in Israel, it doesn't mean it's the BEST way to teach or learn Hebrew for those of us wanting to study it outside of Israel. There are no vowel marks throughout the book. Even for me, someone who has studied Ivrit for several years, and can read Torah which has no vowel marks, this book is a struggle on my own. While it is true to how modern Hebrew is written and spoken and used today, it doesn't make it the best or easiest way to learn.

One of the best introductions to modern Hebrew can be found online for FREE at [...] Many people have also found Rosetta Stone very good.

I would recommend this book only if it is required for your class led by a teacher. Otherwise, move on to other texts that are far more user-friendly. Only after getting some competence could you begin to work your way through this unwieldy, unfriendly book.

Great book used in an ulpan in Jerusalem!

While my family was in Jerusalem, some of our friends there were in an ulpan (Hebrew language school for new immigrants). They were using this book! So I was very excited to see it here! I have been using this book on my own and like it very much. I was glad to see that you can get CDs to go with it and will probably get those next!

I like the pictures which helped me to get the "word stands for this thing" into my head. When you see a computer and say "machshev" it's like you are naming the thing you are seeing, and it seems to stick better. The stories and conversations are humorous, so their simplicity at first doesn't seem dumb. A very engaging book and fun to use. The only lessons that would be better are the totally interactive programs, but if you're like me and can't afford those. This book and the CDs are a good and affordable way to go!

thorough but not perfect

I am halfway through this text, working on my own. I've studied several languages before, so I'll admit I am familiar with the general experience of learning a language. I knew the Hebrew letters before I began this, but only about a dozen miscellaneous words, and no spoken grammar or sounds.

I agree with other reviewers that the lack of grammar explanation makes it harder to use. Because I have other language experience, I am able to make up for the lack of teacher, most of the time. I really like the audio CD and would not recommend studying without it.

The book is very thorough and overall it is well-planned. The handful of nouns and verbs in the opening chapters become the core of many layers of new words, and all cycle back and get repeated. The introduction of lots of borrowed English words, and many geographical place names, adds some instant vocabulary. If you are going to be in Israel, the early chapters will give survival words, like "I am from America" and "I live in Haifa."

The writers were not careful to vet every single lesson for its vocabulary, and in nearly every lesson, a word creeps in that isn't introduced until the next chapter or two. The CD occasionally has a different text, especially when it accompanies handwritten text. These are careless imperfections in a textbook that was clearly planned well otherwise. (A friend told me that it's typical of the military ulpan experience, so it may just go with learning spoken Hebrew.)

My chief criticism of the CD and text is that they didn't carry out the drudgery of reading through the vocabulary list for each lesson. Yes, friends, it's necessary! Nearly every word in the vocabulary list shows up somewhere in a dialogue, but you have to really watch and listen.

I found the opening chapters very overwhelming, because they introduced cursive letters right away, and not even always in the same hand or style, and right away, the words appeared without vowel pointings. Typically, you get the vowels once, and never again. So the first chapters are very, very scary. Reading remains slow and tricky compared to reading a full-alphabet language such as Russian or French.

My attitude in taking this on is what I'd recommend for anyone: take each lesson as it comes. Don't panic, just learn what's in the lesson. Go back and repeat, retrace, and copy out in a notebook for yourself, until you know every word and can read every phrase. Don't worry that you can't read anything else. Just learn the exact confines of that lesson, and then turn the page and learn the exact material of the next. Take your time, and review. Say them out loud, repeat them over in your spare time, and write our lists of words: singular, plural. He does, she does, they do. Gradually you will remember these things, and you will recognize words, and slowly you will learn Hebrew.

Overall, I do recommend this textbook. You learn lots about Israel, too.

About the Author
Wolfram Nagel is a UX and Conceptual Designer at SETU GmbH, a German software engineering company. As Head of UX he supervises internal and external web and software projects in the areas of content design, UI architecture and visual design. He is an expert in interface, interaction and user experience design. Wolfram studied Information Design (diploma) and Design Management (Master of Arts) at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany (University of Applied Sciences). Since 2011, he has lectured and hosted talks & workshops about Multiscreen Experience Design at conferences such as IxDA Berlin, Usability Professionals Germany and the German IA Summit and at and for universities, academies and agencies.

Valuable Resource

In this anthology, Chafe and Sitkoff have collected a number of articles that are critical in understanding the major issues in American history during the past 50 years. Despite the broad thematic scope of essays--ranging from post-war foreign policy to the creation of an "urban underclass" during the Reagan administration--the organization and careful editing of the book provide the reader with a clear understanding of America's recent sociopolitical transitions. The lucid and well-written individual essays, submitted by leading historians and well-known political figures, work particularly well alongside the documents and commentaries they are paired with.
