It was ok... I guess...

I bought this book because of the high reviews and all the hype it gave this book. To be honest I really didn't enjoy this book much. I'm not new to drawing so pages 1 to 331 was not at all interesting to me. In my opinion, it felt like learning how to draw from a young student who is still learning how to draw himself/herself. I was expecting to get 331 pages of information from an actual professional manga artist or from a professor of art who knows a lot about manga but I was disappointed.

Pages 332 to 377 was ok. It explained how to scan a drawing correctly, color a drawing with PhotoShop, add shadows, add photographs to the illustration, color a sketch, use different paint modes, create fillers/special effects/textures/patterns, insert and edit blocks of type. This was the only part of the book that was worth reading.

I think the title "The Monster Book of Manga: Draw Like the Experts" is really miss leading. After reading and studying this book I really don't think anyone will be drawing like the experts anytime soon. I really don't consider any of the artwork in this book to be at an expert level. In my opinion, the artist who created this book is just an average artist and is not expert artist himself/herself.

Even though I did not enjoy this book, I am still giving this a 5 star rating because I know other people will enjoy this book more than I did. I would recommend this book to teens and adult but not kids because this does contain some nudity. This book isn't for everyone. Hopefully this book is made for you and if you choose to purchase this book, it somehow helps you draw like the experts.

Intended for intermnediate to advanced artist,

As others have said this doesn't have much instruction in basis drawing method. This book is intended for artist who want to migrate from pen, ink, & paint to creating it on the computer. The main problem is there are a lot of examples, but each is only given a brief overview of 4-5 pages It would have been better to have fewer examples, but more expanded information for each project.

Also I want to comment on the prudishness of some of the other reviews. Mothers don't worry, there isn't any hentai art in this book, in fact it barely rates PG, kids can use it without any risk of moral corruption.

I thought the book would be a compilation of works from several artists, but instead, it looks at the work of a few, maybe less than 2 or 3 artists. They pretty much look the same. What the illustrations DO show (in no particular order because the pictures are grouped by subject) tips that make a drawing "good" but not "good" in the sense they will transform the amateur artist into a professional.

- Make sure you note the direction of light in your drawings. (curious seeing the drawings have so few shadows...)
- Be mindful of perspective so your drawings do not look flat.
- Use clothing, hair, and accessories to create a feeling of motion.

Some Expert advice I would have liked to learn FROM MANY ARTISTS are:

- Compare and contrast mediums of different types and from different manufacturers
- Inking techniques including fills and line variations
- Color palettes and choices rather than "use earthy colors..."
- Tones (no offense, but the pics are rather flat)
- Markets for distribution, tips on entering the market, who's buying?
- A list of notable manga-ka
- Perhaps some tips for those wanting to become "experts" so they can then become "professionals"

I also would have liked to see the methodology behind proportions explained. Although this is not a book on HOW to draw, seeing how or why choices were made would have been nice. "The girl is young so make her head a little bigger..." No, a lot of manga heads are typically larger than average. Manga characters also have larger eyes, smaller feet, tiny noses and mouths...the drawings stray from the typical manga. These are akin to good cells from Saturday morning cartoons in the U.S...not a real good representation of manga art.

I have a lot of experience with graphic editors, but unless that part of the book covers hardware -- pens, tablets, and other digital drawing technologies, that section is pretty useless to me.

Otherwise a good book -- heavy, well-contructed, arrived in great shape. I'll probably give it to my 9-year old daughter. She likes to draw and probably wouldn't bother to read it any way, but she might find it easier than drawing from photos. A slightly disappointing purchase.

Good Information on Healthy Eating

This book was very helpful in confirming nutritional information that I already knew and practice, as well as giving concrete suggestions about how to implement healthy eating in a daily routine. It is probably not the best book for the already knowledgeable dietician or healthy eater who is familiar with balanced eating. It provides much basic information and a slow, comprehensive method for long-term weight management.

Worthy for clinical practice

As an endocrinologist, the management of obesity is critical to my success in patient care, and I routinely recommend this book for my patients interested in "behavioral" management for obesity. (obesity is treated with diet, excersize, behavior, and then drug/surgery)

In a clincal study the learn program was found as efficacious as a weight loss medication, while both used together was even more potent.

There is no magic in this book, just the simple compilation of years of research done by behavioral scientists to help us overcome the usual barriers to weight loss. One cornerstone technique is the journaling of food eaten. You finish a new chapter a week, adding new layers of knowledge and technique, also documenting in a more sophisticated way.

This method could be applied to any diet plan (low carb, etc - really though they recommend healthy macronutrient selection - and not one known to cause kidney stones - the atkins). All diets will usually use some form of journaling, but the journaling here is worth getting to know.

I'm not only a recommender of this book in obesity management, I'm also a member of NAASO - and so are many of the researchers associated with this book. In my mind, that equals the physicians good housekeeping seal of approval.

Like many, I too am obese, and am presently trying to follow this program. It's not easy.

It is however, not a fad diet, or some silly venture you won't be doing in 6 months. It's a well designed program designed to help you go where you want to go. It is designed after the outpatient program run by the author at his university, and has been used in multiple clicical trails.

About the Author
Radhanath Swami was born in Chicago in 1950. At age nineteen, he traveled overland from London to India, where he lived in Himalayan caves, learned yoga from revered masters, and eventually became a world-renowned spiritual leader in his own right. Book provides a reflective journey and is written for a broad audience; recommended

If you're looking for an introduction to bhakti yoga and the meditative life, then this is a great read. I haven't read the predecessor, so I am new to the author. I am also not an expert in bhakti yoga, so I can't speak to the veracity of his ideas. To clarify for a newbie, bhakti yoga is a way of thinking and living, not a form of exercise. The book is an engrossing read with plenty of food for thought. The author intersperses discussion and explanation of original texts such as the Bhagavad Gita with modern-day experiences and stories. The balance between the two makes the book easy to follow and engaging. It also makes me want to go back and read/reread the original texts such as Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads. Much time is spent in the early chapters asserting that religious divisions are false, that each religion essentially centers on the same god/God with its own cultural context and interpretation. Much time and text is spent showing the similarities across religions and setting apart extremism from devotion in each given religion. Obviously appropriate and many would argue much needed in today's world. There are self-help books and then there are books that take you on a journey of reflection as you read (to quip the title itself). Brene Brown's works also come to mind. The books aren't prescriptive; rather, they guide you through a series of ideas and questions at the end of which you come out with your own plan, your own intentions, and a renewed sense of optimism. That is essentially the stated purpose of this book--to reconnect people with one another and to renew our sense of purpose as one dedicated to love in the broadest sense.

A heartfelt exploration of bhakti yoga and the spiritual journey to one's Source

This book is an inspirational exploration of the path of bhakti yoga - the yoga of love and devotion to the Supreme/God. The swami shares his own personal journey alongside teachings of yogic gurus and experiences of others who follow this path of inner awakening to Divine love. This book provides many reminders of our essential nature and the value of realigning ourselves with that pure loving essence. This is both a philosophical book as well as a practical one. It shares some helpful practices that help kindle the spiritual process, while it shares the wisdom and insights of various sages and mystics who have explored the nature of reality and the deeper meaning of Life. Overall, this is a nice read for anyone looking to commit themselves to go deeper into their spiritual exploration and spiritual practice.

A Wonderful read for everyone, no matter your religion.

I found this a very enjoyable book to read. While the author is a Hare Krishna, and often misunderstood religion in the west, I found his insights to be universally true. In fact his wisdom applies to every religion from Christianity to Judaism and even pagans. Because he hits upon universal truth that I have come to know in my own heart through decades of spiritual searching. Namely that there is one God that we're all trying to connect with, and we are rather miserable trying to live without God in our lives. While the book wasn't one that you just can't put down because it's so exciting and you're learning so much new information every moment, I did find it very interesting to read. The author puts things very well and my favorite parts were the personal stories that he told about people he met to make his point. In fact, most of those stories, like the one about the Indian woman forced to marry at 10, make most of our problems seem insignificant.

It will last the school year

This book was required for one of my kids. The book came clean and she states it is useful and easy to follow. My Mandarin is non-existant so I can't speak to the quality of the writing. But the book itself is well made and even I can follow the pictures. It seems to progress logically. And maybe most important it looks like it will hold up for more than 6 months.

This book aligns with mandarin IB, has simplified and traditional. This is the workbook add on to the textbook, very comprehensive practices that includes writing characters to drawing in meanings. Useful when learning in conjunction with the text!
