The Best

I greatly appreciated this book when I was a student. The tensor analysis is very carefully explained; in addition, you really get a basic physics understanding. The equivalence principle and Mach-Einstein theories discussions are simply wonderful. Of course, some experimental data are too old now to be taken seriously.

A book based on the physics, not the mathematics

After a completing graduate school, I decided it was time to learn GR on my own. I got Weinberg's book, and, at first reading, I was put off by it--there are effectively no diagrams, no problems, and no pedagogy. So on to Misner, Thorne, Wheeler. Well these emperors have no clothes: MTW contains almost no clean, declarative sentences and could be reduced to 1/4 its size with straightforward editing. So I bought B. F. Schutz's book read it, and and went back to Weinberg's book. With both in hand, I am acquiring a satisfying understanding of GR. And I now realize that Weinberg's book is a masterpiece. As in all his texts, Weinberg's passion is to expose the underlying logic of the physics. All follows from the Equivalnce Princple, and this view gives his book a logic coherency that other's lack. (Try seeing where the Equivalence principle fits in Schutz's presentation.) One criticism: I believe that Weinberg was writing a text for his peers to set them straight about GR; he neglected students. It would have been great if he could have included a mathematical appendix or two to make the text more accessible. But even so, it is a wonderful book.

Excellent treatment of GR - written for a physicist

This is one of the finest GR books that is written for a physicist. Although it is slightly dated, it can still be profitably used today to learn the foundations of the subject that no other contemporary text has explained so clearly.
There is a strong emphasis on the equivalence principle in the book, and many interesting illustrations of this principle can be found throughout the book. There's no discussion of black holes, of course, since the book hasn't probably been revised since its publication in the early seventies. However, Weinberg's book can be truly judged based on the brilliant presentation of the physical ideas of GR in a way that is so familiar to the physicist. A mathematically minded physicist who cares little about real physical insights will be obviously disappointed by this book.

Overdue Chronicle of an Animation Master!!

Very pleased to report that my copy of Bakshi's new book "Unfiltered" arrived yesterday via Amazon.com. The pre-order price was $25 which was a amazing for a $40 list hardcover book from Amazon.

The book is insane! Everything you could ask for about his life, history, artistic phases from early cartooning straight through Harlem Shuffle and Spicy City. So pleased to have my Bakshi fix in one "huge" book!

Mostly enjoyed understanding his life and the doodles and art that is sprinkled throughout. Also enjoyed the dedicated sections tied to his movies. Heavy Traffic and American Pop are my favs here.

If you don't have it...get it. What a blessing...

In lyrical, flowing prose, this absorbing autobiography interweaves politics, family relations and romance as it chronicles an extraordinary woman's struggle to free herself from traditional Chinese society. Born into a conventional family, Xie Bingying (1906-2000) was expected to be an obedient daughter and, later, daughter-in-law. A girl's education was largely restricted to learning how to spin cotton and embroider. Xie's reading was limited to such books as Teach Your Daughter Traditional Rules. Her fate was to be determined by her parents and a matchmaker. From an early age, Xie rebelled against these circumstances. Despite her mother's scolding, she dared to venture outside to play with the boys, and she fought fiercely against having her feet bound. In this chronicle of the first 32 years of her life, gracefully translated by her daughter and son-in-law, Xie recounts her efforts to secure an education, escape from an arranged marriage, raise an infant while a single mother and, chiefly, forge political change in China as a soldier in the National Revolutionary Army fighting the warlords who dominated much of China in the 1920s, and against the Japanese in the 1930s. Drawn to the bohemian life, Xie scoffed at financial and physical security, and gloried in her image as a "warrior who opposes all feudal rule," even when her choices summoned hunger, loneliness and imprisonment. The happiest day of her early life, she recalls, was the day in 1928 when her War Diary was published. She went on to become a noted author of novels, other autobiographical works and essays. This story of a Chinese feminist makes social and political issues of 20th-century China dramatically accessible to the lay reader. 12 photos, 3 maps.

The efforts of women to emancipate themselves from restrictive social and family bonds is one of the central themes of modern Chinese history. A high degree of grit, intelligence, perseverance, and luck was required to succeed, particularly in the early decades of the 20th century. Xie Bingying had all those qualities in spades. Like a rocket escaping the pull of gravity, she hurtled from the remote village in central China where she was born in 1906 to a bohemian existence in urban China and eventually to a successful career as a teacher, essayist, novelist, and social activist. In 1927, she became a soldier in the Nationalist Army during its famous Northern Expedition. Her vivid and emotionally charged memoir, covering the first third of her life, was first published in China 60 years ago and is translated here by her daughter and son-in-law. An exemplar of the "new woman," Xie was an idealist and a romantic given to florid writing that matches the impressive melodrama of her life. For larger public and academic libraries. Born in 1906 in Xietuoshan, Xie Bingying demonstrated tenacity and decisiveness from a very early age despite the feudalistic Chinese society into which she was born. She was the daughter of a scholar and a traditional mother. Xie's feet were bound at the age of eight, and she was forced into an arranged marriage contract, but she would not allow any of these customs to tether her future. She sacrificed reputation, family, and love for the pursuit of books and literacy, and she threatened to kill herself if her needs were not met. Xie's unflinching character is demonstrated in her fearlessness as a soldier during Chiang Kai-shek's Northern Expedition and her zealous battle for truth and diplomacy in China. She was a tireless warrior on the front lines and a dedicated writer who endured poverty and endangered her life for propagation of the written word. As a potent feminist, she feared the vulnerability of love and its power to divert her from the path to enlightenment. Xie died in January of 2000 while her autobiography was being translated. I enjoyed her descriptions of people and places

This is one of the most inspiring books I've read. Not only is Xie Bingying inspiring, but also the many selfless people whom she met and worked with. I enjoyed her descriptions of people and places. I compliment her family on their translation of her account; the book makes me feel as though I know Xie. It has also given me a much better feel for the Chinese people. Her account describes the magnitude and pain of the people's struggle against oppressive traditions, and mixed into this simultaneously are the fights against invaders and the infighting of the Chinese revolutionary and political movements. The period seems almost to have been all the world's history wrapped up into a single generation in China.

One of the great poets of the twentieth century

Wystan Hugh (W. H.) Auden is rightly regarded as one of the great poets of the twentieth century. He is one of my favorites because of his great skill with language, his ability to talk about everyday life in wonderfully insightful ways, and to sing while he helps us see what he sees. His even greater gift is to make his words feel as if they came from out of our own mind and heart. We want to possess them.

Yet, he was also a very learned man, but his learning always has a point about life rather than allowing him to step into a spotlight for our adulation. You can flip to any page of this volume and find something to wonder at. Even the plainest poems have depths to plumb and the seemingly obscure yield to patient reading.

While Auden has a somewhat complicated biography, it would be a mistake to get sidetracked in too many details. While knowing the life of an artist often aids our understanding of his work, it is also a mistake to see too many parallels in his work with the happenstance of his life. Great artists draw on their lives, but they also transcend them.

I am very grateful to have this volume in my library.

Don't believe the old man.

Auden is my favorite "modern" English poet (I hate TS Eliot and his fascist friend Pound, for their politics and posturing). I've loved Auden since my college days in the late 40's.(Yes. 1940's.) In those days the poems started with "Musee des Beaux Arts," included "Law Like Love" and "In Memory of W.B. Yeats." The songs started with "As I walked Out One Evening."
A fine clear voice, very even expressions, and sentiments that one could easily subscibe to. I tried to write like that (and in part succeeded). The copy in my library is dated 1945.
Recently I decided to share my love of Auden's poetry and ordered three copies of the book descibed in this listing. What a mistake! It appears that Auden after about 1940, and until the end of his apparently miserable life, changed his style and everything else about himself, AND rewrote, deleted and butchered his early work. What a sad revelation. Don't believe the old man.

Useful as a summary of CPRs for someone studying for the OCS or just wants to try to incorporate some evidence based information into their treatment.

This is a great PT reference book.

This is a very good book. It basically summarizes all PT related clinical prediction rules and puts them all in one book for you. It discusses clinical prediction rule in regards to evaluation, treatment and prognosis. There is also a nice section on the stats that are commonly used with interpretation of the rules. Each rule is broken down and gives the level of evidence, the components of the rule, if you rule has been validated, etc. The only downfall of the book, in my opinion, is that when it gives the stats, the author uses terms such as mild, moderate, etc., instead of giving the actual number value or percentage of the stat. Overall very satisfied with the book. great learning tool.

Awesome ... for a few body parts.

Pros:
Slim and lightweight - I keep it at work, well organized, simple test descriptions with pics, all stats included.
Cons:
Expensive for a limited range of PT diagnoses, a lot of 'fluff' and filler - it prob could've been half the size.

Bottom line:
Good if you create your own evals because you can add these 'random' tests to your special testing section and have a 95% chance of correctly diagnosing your pt in half the time if they meet the criteria. Also good for differential diagnosis of non-musculoskeletal disorders. As an intern, I've found it useful in predicting manip success, but I haven't used it for much else yet.
