Antoni Ferdynand Ossendowski (May 27, 1876 - January 3, 1945) was a Polish writer, journalist, traveler, globetrotter, explorer and university professor. He is best known for his books about Lenin and the Russian Civil War, a war in which he took part.

F. Ossendowski's Journey Through Mysterious Asia.

_Beasts, Men and Gods_, reprinted by Kessinger Publishing, is Ferdinand Ossendowski's fascinating account of his adventures and travels in northern Asia; Siberia, Mongolia, Tibet, and China, in an effort to flee the Red army of the Russian revolution. Dr. Ossendowski was a scientist and writer who lived for a time in Siberia when the Russian revolution broke out. It came about that he became suspected of being a counter-revolutionary and thus had to flee his home one day into the forests. There he began his adventures as related in this book, where he met up first with a murderer and later with various peasants along the way. Eventually, Ossendowski joined the White forces in Mongolia who opposed the revolution and the Bolsheviki. Much of the book is spent relating the various political events that occur in the "heart of Asia" involving Russia, China, Mongolia, and Tibet, and the relations between these nations. The book becomes interesting however when Ossendowski begins to relate the tales of the Buddhist religion of Mongolia. He encounters many of the Lamas, holy pontiffs, and doctors of this religion and relates tales of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa in Tibet, as well as tales of various fortune tellers, poisoners, and soothsayers. Ossendowski also encounters "the Living Buddha", the King of Mongolia, who has become blind through excessive drinking. The Living Buddha is chosen from among the peasants as the incarnation of the Living Buddha in a child (his soul having passed into another body after the death of the previous Living Buddha) and this child is taken to be reared by the Lamas. The Living Buddha relates a special prophecy for all of Asia, which Ossendowski records. In addition, Ossendowski becomes fascinated with tales of a mysterious subterranean kingdom called Agarthi (similar to the kingdom of Aggartha noted by another writer Saint-Yves d'Alveydre in his _Mission de l'Inde_) which can be reached by passageways from throughout the world. In Aggarthi the King of the World or Brahytma lives along with his two assistants, Mahytma (who knows the purposes of future events), and Mahynga (who rules the causes of these events). From what Ossendowski is able to piece together of this legend, many have travelled to the kingdom of Agarthi, returning with much scientific knowledge. In addition, in 1890 the King of the World appeared in a temple to make a special prophecy regarding Asia and the world in the coming century. There he noted that many events and cataclysms would occur, followed by the emergence of those who dwell in the subterranean kingdom into the upper world. Ossendowski's adventure ends at this point, with him travelling to Peking in China and eventually making his way back out of Asia to Europe again. Ossendowski wonders what will happen when Asia rises up to meet Europe in the coming century. This book which has proven itself to be prophetic has remained popular with esotericists ever since. It remains a fascinating travel adventure which occurs at an historic moment, the coming of the Russian revolution and the rise of the communist state at the beginning of the twentieth century.

A must read travel narrative

Ossendowski offers a healthy combination of facts and fantasy in his absorbing account of adventures and misadventures in Russia and Mongolia. So much has been said and written about Beasts, Men and Gods - what is to be added?

First, his worldview: read for a thorough anti-Bolshevik perspective on the Russian revolution;

Second, his fascination with Buddhism and the ideas of pan-Asianism, which he shares with Ungern.

Thirdly, a keen eye for Asia's promising prospects; in his philosophical discourse Ossendowski warns about the imminent rise of "Asia" as a mighty opponent to Old Europe.

Ossendowski's discussion of the life and times of the Mongols is very perceptive; his description of the customs of the people, lamaist religious practices, etc - is very detailed and interesting.

Of course, his glorious adventures in Tibet and Mongolia should be taken with a grain of salt, while the whole last part about the underground "King of the World" might interest mystics, though even this part offers a glimpse into the Mongolian society with its remarkable fusion of beliefs and superstitions.

Introduction

Gtk+ was originally developed by two University of California at Berkeley students, Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis. They had developed, as a part of a school project, an image manipulation called The GNU Image Manipulation Program (The GIMP, gimp). Originally it was written in Motif, but due to the (at the time) closed-source nature of Motif and, as a result, its scarcity on freely available open-source UNIX platforms, they decided to come up with an open-source toolkit, inspired by Motif, to which The GIMP could then be ported. The goal was not to develop a general-purpose toolkit for the X Window System, although that is what Gtk+ has become. Hundreds if not thousands of programs have been written using Gtk+ to date, ensuring that Gtk+ will be around for some time to come. For those of you looking for an introduction to Gtk+ programming, I suggest reading Chapters 1 through 4 first, followed by Chapter 10, "Container and Bin Classes." The first few chapters (Chapters 1, 2, and 3) describe the architecture of Gtk+ and provide information needed to program and build a simple Gtk+ application. Most readers will want to skim through Chapter 4, "Widgets," which describes GtkWidget. GtkWidget is the parent class from which the remaining widgets in the Gtk+ class hierarchy inherit much of their functionality. Container widgets are used to organize the layout of other widgets in a window (or within other containers). The concept of container widgets is described in the first few sections of Chapter 10. The GtkBox widgets are by far the most versatile of the container widgets implemented by Gtk+ 1.2 and, as a result, are the most commonly used. GtkBox, GtkHBox, and GtkVBox are all described in Chapter 10 of this book.

The remaining chapters provide detailed descriptions of the bulk of the widget classes implemented in Gtk+ 1.2. I have made every effort to describe in detail the application-level programming interfaces exposed by the Gtk+ widget sets covered in this book. I have included most of the code I wrote while investigating the Gtk+ widget set. In some cases, the source code consists of a full-size (although functionally limited) application. In all other cases, I simply present short code snippets that help to illustrate points made in the surrounding text. Complete source-code examples for the book can be found on my Web site at cts/crash/s/slogan/gtkbook.html

I have placed Gtk+ widget reference material directly in the main body of the text (as opposed to placing it at the end of the book in an appendix). The reference material provides function prototypes for each of the application-level functions that have been exposed by the widgets described in the book and a one-line sentence describing the purpose of each of these functions. In the reference section, I also enumerate all of the object attributes that can be set and/or retrieved on the widget (see the "Object Attributes" section in Chapter 3, "Signals, Events, Objects, and Types"). I also list the signals that can be generated by the widget, if any. For each signal, I supply the function prototype of the application-level signal handler invoked when the signal fires (see the "Signals" section in Chapter 3). The reference material provides an introduction to the widget for first-time programmers and can serve as a quick reference for programmers who are already familiar with widgets. More information about the structure of the reference section is spelled out in Chapter 4 (see the reference section for the GtkWidget widget).

This book focuses on describing the Gtk+ widget set. This book does not cover the Gtk+ Drawing Kit (GDK), or the G Library (Glib), or widget writing in any detail (except where unavoidable). For GDK and GLib, I refer you to one or both of the following books: Developing Linux Applications with GTK+ and GDK by Eric Harlow and GTK+/Gnome Application Development by Havoc Pennington. You can also find reference material on these topics at gtk. I do plan to provide an additional chapter on Gtk+ widget development on my Web site; it should be available shortly after this book goes to press. Amazon Should Do Better

It is bordering on criminal that Amazon is hawking a FOURTEEN YEAR OLD technical book like this as new "first edition." I clicked too fast, and ended up with a doorstop, or maybe a stack of non-absorbent TP, that is for a graphics library that is FIVE EDITIONS out of date, and so old the web site to download the sample programs is long removed. Don't fall for this. Next time I will surely read the fine print more closely. Amazon has lost a lot of my trust. Buyer beware.

Sensible Reference for Gtk+-1.2 outside of GNOME

This book has a fairly clean layout. The index is a bit tepid, but Ok. So far, for content, the book is slightly better than the other two books I have seen. Donna Martin's doorstop for SAMs is pretty good, but a bit winded. Eric Harlow's book is also good, but too lean. I see a Jack Sprat pattern there.

I consider this book a good reference, not a tutorial. I like a book that does not waste too much time on the ubiquitous 'Hello World', crawling its way up to an excruciating sample application. I do not have an affinity to that style; Even for tutorials. Usually open source is replete with examples anyway.
I often judge a book by seeing if it can quickly answer a specific question, which did not immediately leap to my attention, from the standard Web docs. How do I change the text label on a button? What do the arguments really look like? Having figured it out already, I noticed this book answers the question right out of the contents page and on page 179, with an example of the proper object property arg "GtkButton::label". It is more pleasant to learn from brief working examples, than syntax diagrams and source code.
Another feature that jumped out was the "API Synopsis" sections. Fast, single sentence descriptions followed by the API call, on a class by class basis. Nice touch.
An IMPORTANT note on ergonomics, which you cannot possibly experience by clicking 'What's inside': This book is fabricated with the same lightweight, semi-gloss, low-acid paper that another one of my favorite books, Stroustrup's C++ opus, is published with. This means the book is thinner, taking up less shelve space. More importantly, the pages turn easily, indexed by finger, and when browsing the inner meat of the book, it stays open without coaxing. This means I don't have to constantly interrupt my browsing both machine and book to crack the binding. This kind of babysitting quickly vectors toward the intolerable, in particular, with the big, cheap doorstops. Good reference books need to be browseable in random fashion, right out of the shrink wrap.
A note to Logan: Nice job. On the second edition, put a bigger index in the book. It might be nice to see your "Synopsis" block style description of the most popular signals for widgets (table 4.2)and containers (table 10.1) in the signal chapter, as well as the classes. It saves flipping.

Good Reference for "Real World" Programming

My first impression after I purchased this book was that it would have limited usefulness. However, after about two weeks on my first GTK+ project it became clear that it was actually the most useful of three books I had purchased. After having this book for more than a year, it is what I turn to about 85% of the time when I have a GTK+ question. If this book has a weakness it would be that it doesn't mention much about the GNOME desktop. However, for "real world" programming on a GTK+ based project that will last more than a couple of weeks or go beyond the basics, this book is a timesaver. I also have the book by Peter Wright that covers GNOME and is a fairly useful supplement to this book.

About the Author
Michael Day completed his doctorate degree at Stanford University and has taught middle and high-school art in California. A widely published author and researcher, Dr. Day is a recipient of the Manuel Barkan Award for published research from NAEA. He has served on national panels, editorial boards for national scholarly publications, and art museum boards. He was invited to the former Soviet Union in a scholarly exchange sponsored by the International Research and Exchanges Board, and in 1998 he was one of five scholars invited to Beijing in a delegation sponsored by the Getty Education Institute and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Dr. Day served as President of the NAEA from 1997 to 1999.

Al Hurwitz has taught at the elementary and secondary levels in Miami-Dade County, Florida. He was the Director of Visual and Performing Arts for Newton, Massachusetts schools and taught art education at Harvard University Graduate School of Education Ohio State University, Teacher's College, Columbia University, Brandeis University, and the Massachusetts College of Art. He has written, co-authored, or edited 12 books on art education and served on the United States Society for Education through Art (USSEA). He has also served on the planning committee of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

About the Author
Anthony Sully (DesRCA, FCSD, FRSA, FHEA) has studied art and interior design at undergraduate and post-graduate level, and has practised interior design on a freelance basis and as an employee working with designers and architects. He has designed many projects, which have gained public recognition and awards and has been the course director for five degree programmes in the UK and a visiting professor to two institutions in the USA.
He has  written two books previously published in 1970 and 2012 and continues to  research and engage with current trends and developments. He is also an artist in acrylic and digital media.
