Excellent review book for MLS ASCP!

This book contains everything you need to pass ASCP BOC MLS. If you're so tired of clueless ppt slides from lectures and irresponsible instructors, this book gives you an overall coverage of MLS. However, you do need to purchase ASCP BOC book to be familiar with the question style and some knowledge points. Good luck! Remember the pass rate is over 90% nation wide when you're suffering anxiety during MLS BOC.

Great Study Guide

This book summarizes all the subjects for the CLS board exam very well. It gives great explanations to the practice questions at the end of each chapter. I purchased the Robert Harr CLS Review and the index cards as well and I feel like SUCCESS! is a combination of both. Instead of a cd it gives an online supplement.

A must have

I used this book along with Robert Harr's Clinical Lab Science Review (3rd edition). I highly recommend purchasing both! These books were the only materials I used, and after studying for 1 month I ended up scoring in the high 600s. I found a lot of similarity between the questions in SUCCESS! and the actual exam, and the review sections were fantastic. I just though Robert Harr's CLS review was a bit more thorough, and the CD was very helpful (it had images, great questions, etc). GET BOTH and you will pass if you put the effort in!

As a public speaker I enjoyed reading these stories and thought as I read them how I might use them in my presentations. Some I had heard before, but most I had not. If you need some sort of lesson to be learned sort of story, this little book has 99 of them.

cognitive-neuroscience take on neolithic society, religion, and artifacts

This is an interesting, if uneven, book that attempts to penetrate the thought processes of neolithic peoples in the Near East and Western Europe. For anyone who is familiar with the issues, the sudden appearance of cities, stone structures, and art objects constitute a great mystery. Sure, they accompanied the adoption of agriculture, but what did they mean? Why did they share certain characteristics? How did the creators think of them at the time? How did they conceive of life and the cosmos?

The authors attempt, via the precepts of cognitive neuroscience, to answer these questions. While I have doubts about the approach, archaeologists currently view cognitive neuroscience - maps of how brains process information - are a fundamental step forward in their methodology, on the same level as radio-carbon dating and the application of population genetics were in the latter half of the 20C.

The principal ideas are strikingly clear. First, the human mind is "hard wired" with certain concepts, which are universally found in all cultures. In this case, the relevant ones involve a kind of cosmological hierarchy, whereby there is an underworld (death/birth), the mundane world of the everyday, and an ethereal realm of transcendence (afterlife/realms of the gods). Second, this hierarchy is displayed in everything that survives of neolithic culture, from the burial sites and stone architecture to the hallucinogenic states of ecstatic religious visions so central to religious experiences. Third, as supported by anthropological evidence in existing primitive cultures, the mental categories of the neolithic mind were more fluid than ours are today, melding into each other, e.g. so that a person can be in a trance and thus elsewhere as well as momentarily dead, only to return to life later. It also meant that religious authorities represented power relationships, reflected in the division of labor, class. In this way, society, religion, cosmology, art, architecture, and even work are all of a piece, hardly distinguishable as mental categories but seen as part of a continuous spectrum. Fourth, religion can be defined as a) experience; b) the beliefs that come therefrom; c) the practices that are hence adopted to support them. Fifth, and this was really new to me, the authors argue that this hierarchical ideology took hold BEFORE the adoption of the agricultural innovations that have come to define the period.

Everything in the neolithic can, the authors assert, be understood in accordance with this framework of ideas. Not only are architecture, design motifs, and sculpture a reflection of this hierarchy, but so were the organization of society and religion. This provides a tidy way to interpret things. With the urbanization that was made possible with farm-food surpluses, elites could justify themselves and their place in the hierarchy by their monopoly on visions and access to other realms. Even animal totems are explainable: as water is a nether realm, so snakes that inhabit land and water are gateway beings between the hierarchical levels, hence merge with man in certain visions.

This is all fine, but there are some serious problems with the approach. Most importantly, the authors never defined to my satisfaction what they meant by "neurologically hard wired". On the one hand, they say it is the common basis of all mankind, but never explore whether we are born with it, whether the brain's structure is the reason, or if experience programs it in. On the other hand, they repeatedly assert that their argument in not deterministic. This is irreconcilable in my opinion. In addition, there is no way to prove or disprove their conjectures scientifically, except to fit all available archaeological observations into their framework. Finally, they apply as support for their argument many observations from contemporary cultures, such as the bushmen of south Africa. Perhaps it wasn't always so. At any rate, the jumps in logic were often too much for me, for example when they state what the meaning of red paint would have been (blood, underworld, or some such as sacred).

Regarding the book's scope, there were too many loose ends for my taste. Without more on the cognitive neurosciences, I often felt adrift with the jargon and could not accept their assumptions. Then, why did this hierarchical politico-religious ideology arise at the time it did? I think it is easier to assume that it followed the spread of farming rather than the other way round, as the authors continually argue, but this theme, too, is glossed over and not explored in the depth that such a revolutionary claim deserves.

This is an interesting book and it is a fun read. Unfortunately, I found the prose rather clunky and academic, too abstruse, if often well expressed. Recommended with these caveats in mind.

As Meaninful For Modern Humans as For Stone Age People

These topics constitute the essence of human nature. David Lewis-Williams and David Pearce outdistance themselves and many of their professional colleagues in the breadth and clarity with which they pursue these subjects. Their insights are as valid for modern Generation X, and beyond as they are concerning cave dwellers. The breadth of their scholarship and of their insights are equally profound. Their way of being thorough may require slow and careful reading, but the rewards for meeting them on their own ground justify both them and the effort that goes in to embracing the huge domain of their accomplishments.

almost spellbinding!

I agree with the positive comments of the previous reviews. In addition, I would point out that the neuropsychological basis of the descriptions and explanations presented has serious implications for any student of science and philosophy.

Beyond this profound benefit, one can use this book as an anaytical tool to evaluate one's own consciousness and beliefs.

Once you understand where and why humans have gone so horribly wrong, you can resolve to take actions to ensure you do not repeat the same mistakes.

THAT is precious knowledge!

Read this, read it all. I have studied astrology, read OOB literature by Robert Monroe, Seth Material by Jane Roberts, etc...etc...! All great, but truly only precursors to getting closer to who and what we are. If you are a searcher, and you must be if you "stumbled" on this material, buy ALL of Lou's books and be prepared for a wild ride around this universe. Enjoy all of the many revelations, the uncovering of many mysteries but also be prepared for his ultimate message, "we are not here to change the world, we are here for the world to change us". The responsibility of the weight of "personal" responsibility that permeates his "message", should be the most important piece you take away from this book and all of his others. You will get your share of UFO's, ancient history and current affairs but heed the true message of cultivating integrity, because this is why we're all really here.

Another OUTSTANDING Book! you can't resist reading

As usual, Lou Baldin has published ANOTHER of his OUTSTANDING books. When you look up at the sky at night and you see the bazillion stars twinkling at you, in a way, they are speaking to you. Big question is Are you listening? If you are ready to expand your "mental/spiritual" horizons from your current limited "beliefs", give your self permission to stretch your mental neurons . In the end, you may discover a greater awareness of what this life is all about in a way never previously considered. In the process, you may experience it from "front row seats"; the greatest theatrical performance available to 3D/4D humans...grounded to earth.

Information for the road we travel

I have read everything that Lou has written over the years.

Every blog turned into books and every book written as non fiction.
This is more along the blog circuit in question and answer format.

Lou is not for everyone.
His answers are clear and resonate if you are being open and honest with your self, and with in the layers of information some where is E.T.
I say Lou is not for everyone, because not everyone wants to hear the stark reality of their personal truth and how it all ties in with those from outside and other dimensions.

People want to read Gene Roddenberry, but spare the Spock philosophy.
Lou is Spock with light touches of Gene Roddenberry.

I always pick up something new in ATS blogs that relates directly to me.
This time it was about how we/I operate outside our/my own parameters. I never had a clue that there were parameters, and reading someone like Lou tells you that you are seeking to live outside those set parameters.

I also read Lou leans to the right in his ideology which is really quite surprising because Lou's thoughts (IMHO) and realities read like a central leaning left progressive like myself; could it be our definition of right is all wrong?

Lois van Baarle is a freelance animator/illustrator from the Netherlands who graduated in 2009 from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Since then, her work has become very popular across the internet, with her Facebook followers closing in on one million and her Twitter account watched by over nineteen thousand eager eyes. Lois van Baarle
Lois has been drawing since the day she could hold a pencil, and started teaching herself to draw digitally in 2003. Although she was born in Holland and has Dutch nationality, she has lived all over the world, including the United States, Indonesia, France and Belgium. Upon finishing high school in 2004, she studied animation in Ghent (Belgium) for a year and then moved back to her home country to study animation at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) in Hilversum. She is currently a freelance illustrator and animator located in Utrecht (the Netherlands).

A nicely construct book and sleeve

If I would add a sixth star if it were there. A nicely construct book and sleeve. A perfect addition to my art book self. Between the covers you will explore Lois's artistic journey, behind the scenes, digital painting works in progress and sketches and studies. Her concept art and storyboards along with tutorials and her quick tips. I really appreciate Loish and her exploration of color and form. Buy it.

This is one of the best books by an artist that I have ever owed

I received my copy after supporting her on Kickstarter. Honestly, This is one of the best books by an artist that I have ever owed. It came with playing cards, a book mark, a 3dpublishing zine, and a video tutorial. The packaging is even beautifully done. However, these aren't what make the book brilliant. Have you ever followed an artist's work and studied them trying to figure out what they were thinking? Or even find yourself in a slump or with artist block?? Well This book is the perfect pick-me-up. She explains her thoughts, work flow, and what It takes to get things done. This book does not just show you pretty pictures. It shows you the time and effort. It feels like she gave you a piece of herself. This was just so Excellently done.

Great for new and old artists!

Absolutely love this book!! I love loish as a creator, as an artist, as a person and this book really gives you a look into her process as well as her past as an artist. It's a fun and wonderful book for anyone who loves her style and what she creates. I would recommend this book to any young illustrators or artist interested in a fun and informative book. As for more experienced artist this book is perfect for understanding how she makes her specific work in her style so keep that in mind when purchasing. Still loved this book, great for referencing when I need inspiration and for giving me tips!

Excellent & Ambitious Review of Oceanic Art.

An excellent study of Oceanic Art with really nice presentation, good quality binding and paper, well photographed items, abundant historical and field photos, and well-researched and readable text. The main parts of the book deal with : Art In Early Oceania; The Settlement of Western Oceania; Voyaging and Monumental Architecture; Art, Trade & Exchange in New Guinea; Art, War & Pacification in New Guinea; Cosmologies and Collections in New Guinea; Island Melanesuia 1700-1940; Eastern and Northern Oceania 1700-1940; War & Visual Culture; Decolonization, independence and cultural revival; Art In Oceania Now 1989-2012.

Here is a book that takes Oceanic Art seriously, but without taking itself too seriously.....and where the art is put into historical and cultural context without sacrificing how visually stunning Oceanic tribal art is. The artwork is well proportioned, often full or half-page, and includes the usual masks and figures, but also fabrics and drums and shields, and costumes and many fascinating architectural elements. A minor drawback is that some of the items featured are a little too familiar from other publications, but overall this is a marvelous book, and highly recommended. I bought my copy for under 50 bucks, which is a great value for a large, ambitious and well executed book such as this.

Comprehensive, beautiful photography

This is a great book. It is more comprehensive than most books on oceanic art. We especially enjoyed the photographs of the masks and other adornments in use.
