Amazon.com Review
Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins has few illusions about the world--at least not about the world of a young black veteran in the late 1940s in Southern California. His stint in the Army didn't do anything to dissuade him from his belief that justice doesn't come cheap, especially for men like him. "I thought there might be some justice for a black man if he had money to grease it," Easy says. Fired from his job on the line at an aircraft plant, he's in danger of losing his home, symbol of his tenuous hold on middle class status. That's a good enough reason to accept a white man's offer to pay him for finding a beautiful, mysterious Frenchwoman named Daphne Monet, last seen in the company of a well-known gangster. Easy's search takes the reader to an L.A. few writers have shown us before--the mean streets of South Central, the after-hours joints in dirty basement clubs, the cheap hotels and furnished rooms, the places people go when they don't want to be found. Evocative of a past time, and told in a style that's reminiscent of Hammet and Chandler, yet uniquely his own, Mosley's depiction of an inherently decent man in a violent world of intrigue and corruption rang up big sales when it was published in 1990 (although the movie version, with Denzel Washington as Easy, never found the audience it deserved). The minor characters are deftly and brilliantly developed, especially Mouse, who saves Easy's life even as he draws him deeper into the mystery of Daphne Monet. Like many of Mosley's characters, Mouse makes a return appearance in the succeeding Easy Rawlins mysteries, such as A Red Death, Black Betty, and White Butterfly, every one of which is as good as Devil in a Blue Dress, his first. --Jane Adams

Reissue of the first book in Moseley's Easy Rawlins mystery series, in which Easy is hired to track down a woman who disappeared with someone else's money.

From Library Journal
The year is 1948, and black war veteran "Easy" Rawlings has just lost his job and is hard up for a mortgage payment. Along comes DeWitt Albright, a violent white man with a simple job for Easy: find the woman wearing a blue dress in a particular photograph. Easy makes his way to the steamy black jazz clubs of Los Angeles and discovers he's not the only one interested in the mysterious lady. Soon murder litters the trail, and the Los Angeles police become curious about Easy's whereabouts. The steamy, gritty life in Watts is the backdrop for this fine mystery, which is filled with exceptionally crafted characters, detailed atmosphere, and a compelling story line. Reader George C. Simms's mellow delivery and richly voiced acting makes this a true winner. Strongly recommended for most mystery collections.

Liked the initial set up better than conclusion
By fra7299
Mosley’s Devil in a Blue Dress is several things: social commentary about race relations and prejudices during this time period, noir with voice-over from antihero, crime tale with twists, tension and suspense. There are also some uncomfortable themes scattered throughout. Money is also a recurrent theme, a prime motivator for many characters, and Easy falls prey to this lure as well.

Mosley does an effective job of making post-World War 2 Los Angeles come alive with realism and grittiness. Amid the diversity of Los Angeles, we see antihero Easy Rawlings , as he returns from the war, struggling to claim his piece of the American Dream, even if it only to pay next month’s mortgage. We are pushed instantly into the first main conflict when Easy is given a seemingly straightforward task of finding the whereabouts of Daphne Monet. However, the man who requests this, Mr. Albright, is shady as they come, and Easy soon learns that the task at hand is more complex—and dangerous—than Easy would have imagined. Deceit, violence, chaos, and murder ensue. From Easy’s voice over, we follow his pursuit of this mysterious woman, as he goes through seedy places and characters. There are times when he questions why he even got involved in the first place, but it seems as though once he is in, there is no other place to go.

The set up, and first half of the novel, was much more compelling to me than the second half, which seems to wander and become a bit convoluted. Easy is over his head in this deception game created by others, but he is quick to use his smarts and instincts to play the game as well. The uncovering of secrets and the big reveal didn’t quite have the impact that I’d hoped for, and Easy, while a serviceable main character, sort of flat-lines at some point, and never progresses beyond this.

I’m still glad to have read, as this novel is a different take on the genre, and a novel I’ve heard so much about. I would be interested to pick up another in the series, just to see where the story goes from here.

The First Entry in what turns out to be a signature character for the author
By C.B. Derrick
Mosley creates a mood and a character (in Easy Rawlins) that is at once powerful, and yet deceptively simple.

It took me a long time to get around to reading this (even though I'm a HUGE fan of Mosley's scifi short story collection FUTURELAND), and I'm not sure why. It reads like a charm, still feels fresh (for this genre) and gives some interesting insight into LA in the 40s from the African American perspective.

I read this back-to-back with Chester Himes' IF HE HOLLERS, LET HIM GO, which is a blistering and caustic story set in the same time period -- but written then -- and these two books together paint a portrait of the ugly side of America and Los Angeles in terms of race relations, power grabs and the arbitrary nature of

This isn't a masterpiece, but it's not meant to be; it's hard-hitting 1940s-era crime fiction, and Mosley definitely knows how to twist the tension up when he needs to.

You'll definitely want to read more Mosley and Earl Rawlins stories after this.

entertaining but educational look at social history and discrimination
By Virginia
This book presents a good look at the social history of the 1940s and is very engaging. It presents racial inequities in a format that is not likely to be offensive to anyone but shows how prejudice endures far longer than it should. The book was recommended to me by my former philosophy professor, and I am glad.

Born and raised in Texas, like Easy Rawlins, I left Texas partly because of the racist attitudes prevalent there in the late 1950s and 1960s. Like Rawlins, I found California less stressful, because the racism was less entrenched and not "in my face" as it had been in Texas. I am Caucasian but participated in the Civil Rights Movement as a student. Many do not realize the degree to which racist language and behaviors are entrenched in our society. Walter Mosley presents these situations and problems in ways that raise our awareness and move us to question ourselves. I am now an Easy Rawlins fan and will read the other books.
